A developer’s entry into the market is often more opportunistic than planned. The Candy brothers — two of the most successful property moguls in the world — did not have a property-related background. They bought their first flat for £122,000 in 1995, patched it up, lived in it for a while, then realised that they could make a bit of money and sold it for a 40 per cent profit before moving on to a new project. Today they are estimated to be worth £330 million.
