The cost of keeping warm in an old house

Just over a week ago my wife and I were pacing the bare wooden floor of our
sitting room wearing hats and scarves. It was -2C outside and, clearly, not
much warmer inside. We had a fire lit and the central heating going full
blast, but did it make any difference? No.

Water torture in southeast London

As far as morning routines go, it’s an unusual one. After waking up in their
flat in southeast London, Andrea Hurst and Joseph Roberts climb out of bed,
straighten the duvet — and cover it with a giant plastic sheet. They then
walk through their bedroom, padding over a carpet covered in more plastic
sheeting, to check that their home has suffered no further damage in the
night.

Beyond the Brochure: Another fine mess

I can’t help feeling a bit tetchy when the children hang around my desk. They
climb onto my chair and spin like they’re on a Nasa training program,
sending coffee cups and amazingly important bits of paper flying across the
room.

off Glasgow’s Byres Road meant a dramatic culture change for Niki Jones. But
when you step into her home, you get the feeling that she has brought a bit
of Bali with her, along with other Eastern influences, gathered from her
extensive travels.

The restoration drama club

Glimpsing the near derelict ivy-clad folly through the Lancashire cornfields
on his drive to work, Mark Horton was entranced. “It looked like a spooky
old castle,” he says of the crumbling but still ornate 18th-century
building. “But I thought it would make a cracking family home.”

Interiors: Rise and shine

At this time of year, I like to change my bed linen, whether it needs it or
not. (Ha, ha. No, really, I do wash my sheets regularly.) Nothing ushers in
spring like re-dressing your bed in a candy-striped duvet cover, swapping
dark velvet-backed throws for something in, say, lavender mohair or adding a
pile of fat cushions, printed in clashing brights.
